Mona Lisa (2004)

They say you should write what you know, and this song is about a painting, written from the point of view of another painting. Dealing with themes of jealously and resentment, it sets the record straight on probably the most famous, most overrated piece of portraiture in history. Or maybe it’s just a funny little pop song.
She’s a masterpiece
A timeless work of art
I’m just a study in charcoal
I’m just a false start

Face to face across the gallery
She’s trying to stare me down
I’d like to say it didn’t bother me
But who would listen when she is around

‘Cos she’s the Mona Lisa
Hanging up on her wall
They all run to see her
And they don’t notice me at all

I thought I saw her smiling once
But it was only the light
They call her fascinating
But she’s just uptight

You know they got her in a glass case
So you can look but not touch
Well the only reason she’s in there
Is ‘cos some people, they hate her so much

‘Cos she’s the Mona Lisa
Two and a half feet tall
Such a heavenly creature
And such a terrible bore

And that’s the Mona Lisa
Hanging up on her wall
They all run to see her
And they don’t notice me at all
